All pressure equipment should perform an hydro or gas test. This type of test is characterized by an intrinsic possibility to cause critical damages, so this reason induces the manufacturing company to deal with a risk assessment. The high energy stored in the equipment under pressure is considered one of the main risks for nearby personnel and facilities that could be injured by the test fluid or by the emission of some equipment components. This possible hazardous event drives the manufacturer to consider specific safety measures, specially focused on protection from the severity of the possible damages, like bunkers or dedicated test benches. This paper deals with the risk analysis for a specific case study, where an high pressure test is performed to check some performance parameters of the products. The products under test, are not the classical pressure equipment but they are rotating machines like centrifugal compressors (oil&gas production, gas transportation, refinery and petrochemical industries, fuel gas boosting, etc) and steam turbines (oil&gas, power generation, etc). The pressure test activity process was analyzed step by step through a Failure Mode Effect Analysis approach. Starting from the layout and facilities definition until the pressure relief system, all the project has been focused on detailed testing process hazard review. Then for each risk, all the possible safety measures in terms of prevention and protection have been identified and evaluated in order to minimize the risks compatibly with the production process constraints. The results of the analysis was the overall assessment of the safety measures that were already present in the factory and the introduction of some additional new ones in order to achieve the best safety standard. The purpose of the project is the complete redesign of some test benches for pressure tests looking also to the procedures that should be improved or added during the production time.
