In this paper we analyzed the operative cost (sludge disposal in landfill and energy) and carbon footprint of an anoxic/aerobic activated sludge wastewater treatment plant with anaerobic stabilization of sludge, considering different utilization pathways for energy recovered from biogas. The analysis was conducted over a wide range of the mean cell retention time of the activated sludge process. The analysis shows that scenarios which minimize the CFP do not minimize the operative cost. Results of this analysis appears to be site-specific because significantly affected by unit cost for electric energy and above all the dry content of the dewatered sludge and the unit cost for sludge disposal.
