The degree of racemization of aminoacidsreleased by hydrolysis of pyrophosphate extracts of two soils (PN and PS) from the Apuan Alps in Italy has been determined. Higher d- to -l values from the PS soil support the view that this soil contains organic matter having a higher mean residence time than does the PN soil. In addition the results indicate that the organic matter in the fraction of molecular weight from 1000–10,000 from both soils has a greater age than material of lower molecular weight and possibly also of higher molecular weight.
