The identification and classification of buried mines is performed in 3D from raster scans using ground-penetrating radar. This measures the range of scattered features below the ground as a function of the x,y position of the probe above the surface. Compared to the conventional 2D analysis, the accuracy of the results obtained is appreciably higher as the information from many individual scans is combined together. A method is suggested for displaying the 3D results so as to give optimal guidance to the user. Examples of 3D data from a single mine and from multiple objects are given.

Abstract

The identification and classification of buried mines is performed in 3D from raster scans using ground-penetrating radar. This measures the range of scattered features below the ground as a function of the x,y position of the probe above the surface. Compared to the conventional 2D analysis, the accuracy of the results obtained is appreciably higher as the information from many individual scans is combined together. A method is suggested for displaying the 3D results so as to give optimal guidance to the user. Examples of 3D data from a single mine and from multiple objects are given.
