This book has a collection of chapters on urban change and explores some basic issues on how urban transformation should be achieved with less conflicts by putting particular emphasis on sustainable planning and design process. The standards of change have evolved overtime and profoundly have affect places of living. A collection of views, questions and answers look to improve the design of urban environment recognising city’s dynamism. The book describes today’s evolving concept of urban change and sustainability, in terms of environmental, urban, economic and social dimension, that is necessary to be measured to urban development. Every sustainable intervention should be seen as an expression of value of design. Sustainable built environment is a cultural asset and good heritage management and maintenance should be seen either as an attitude for placemaking. In a changing world the current standards on sustainable development efforts are the result of ethical reflexion, research and experience that have to consider appreciation and adaptation of diversity of culture and of a wider involvement of various actors. The book is organising into two corresponding parts. Part One, Questions of Transformation explains that the recognition of heritage value is central for urban transformation. Moreover, describes how built heritage needs to be tackled sustainably and how lessons learned from the past have to be considered for a successful urban planning and development. Part Two, Revealing Contexts and Opportunities illustrates urban rehabilitation and built heritage in city environment that investigates on the margins between historic character of built environment and transformation process by assessment of urban change within sensitive/sustainable criteria.
