The interest towards wood plants of Mediterranean area can be either naturalistic or analytical, by considering them as important economical resources. Their recovery and exploitation is becoming a key milestone for models of economical sustainability. The present national and international technologies are focused on economic exploitations of such plant biomasses essentially by converting them in energy sources through thermochemical and biochemical processes. Rarely, such materials (characterized by a high environmental impact and expensive to dispose off) are seen as novel cheap raw materials suitable to be utilized (before to their final use as energy sources) as source of bio-products possessing a high added value. At the present state of the art, only a few cases of production of tannins for tanning technologies as well as in winemaking by non-Italian Companies can be enumerated. In addition, in recent years, some products for cosmetic applications obtained by tannins extracted from pine bark have been launched into commerce. In the present paper, we reported the results of phytochemical characterization as well as antimycotic activity of extracts of Pinus spp. and Castanea spp. Such data may be utilized for proposing novel strategies of sustainable utilization of wood plants of forest origin. Such interdisciplinary approach may allow a preliminary study of environmental evaluation (through involving of local industries) over a given Italian forest area as well as some fundamental indication for studies of Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). Such data may allow preliminary surveys related to the economic sustainability of above processes. The final milestone may be a local exploitation of such plant biomasses (by creating added value) by introducing an additional phase (production of bio-products) between biomass production and biomass disposal or biomass exploitation as energy source. Such results could be utilized in the future for an environmental certification (ISO 14000) and for requesting a hallmark Ecolabel for finished products.
