This paper deals with the proposal of a new parameter for channel identification in ultra wideband (UWB) indoor environments. The proposed method does not imply any estimation process to the received signal and it is able to clearly distinguish not only between LOS and NLOS conditions, but it is also able to order the quality of two different LOS or NLOS conditions, although the SNR is the same. The method proposed here is based on the kurtosis index calculation. Results were obtained by both real measurements and simulations with IEEE802.15.3a channel models.

Abstract

This paper deals with the proposal of a new parameter for channel identification in ultra wideband (UWB) indoor environments. The proposed method does not imply any estimation process to the received signal and it is able to clearly distinguish not only between LOS and NLOS conditions, but it is also able to order the quality of two different LOS or NLOS conditions, although the SNR is the same. The method proposed here is based on the kurtosis index calculation. Results were obtained by both real measurements and simulations with IEEE802.15.3a channel models.
