Previous studies have provided evidence that Vibrio and aeromonas are widw spread in the Arno Basin. This wide diffusion of Vibrionaceae, and a growing sanitary interest in the matter due to thir pathogenetic properties, suggest a more detailed assessment of their ecology. We investigated the presence of vibrionaceae in relation to sewage water flowing to the Arno River, and the role of limnic crustaceans (Copepoda, Isopoda and Amphipoda) in the harboring and spreading these microorganisms in the aquatic environment. V. cholerae non-O1 results as autochtonos microorganism in the aquatic environment, related mainly to physico-chemical factors. Aeromonas (a.hydrophila, A.caviae and A.sobria), on the contrary, seems to have both environmental and human origin. Both microorganisms are epibiotically associated with crustaceans.
