In the present paper the multimodal problem of flutter stability is firstly formulated and then simplified step by step in order to reduce it to an equivalent bimodal system which leads to easier and faster calculations. Most of the assumptions on which this passage is based are very easy to check. Also, in order to support this procedure, two real bridges are considered as practical examples, and the results show that through a well conceived bimodal approach it is possible to obtain practically the same results as the multimodal calculation. The present study can represent a theoretical investigation about the flutter mechanism and also a start point for a simplified method of calculation of flutter critical condition.

Abstract

In the present paper the multimodal problem of flutter stability is firstly formulated and then simplified step by step in order to reduce it to an equivalent bimodal system which leads to easier and faster calculations. Most of the assumptions on which this passage is based are very easy to check. Also, in order to support this procedure, two real bridges are considered as practical examples, and the results show that through a well conceived bimodal approach it is possible to obtain practically the same results as the multimodal calculation. The present study can represent a theoretical investigation about the flutter mechanism and also a start point for a simplified method of calculation of flutter critical condition.
