Il tatuaggio: da indice di rischio a espressione dell'individualità

Obiettivo della rassegna è fornire un’ampia panoramica dei paradigmi teorici e dei filoni di ricerca che hanno come oggetto il significato del tatuaggio, le sue implicazioni cliniche e le traiettorie evolutive di cui è parte. Al riguardo si delineano ipotesi antitetiche: da un lato si sostiene che il tatuaggio è indicatore di quadri psicopatologici; dall’altro si argomenta come esso giochi un ruolo portante nell’espressione e costruzione dell’identità personale. Obiettivo specifico della rassegna è rendere ragione di questa impressionante variabilità, ponendo l’enfasi sull’utilità di considerare il tatuaggio come un fenomeno multidimensionale, che può presentare caratteristiche diverse ed essere parte di tipologie di soggetti diversi. The objective of this review was to provide an overview of the theoretical paradigms that have inspired research on the meaning of tattoos, on the clinical implications of tattooing and on the developmental trajectories within which tattooing may occur. Several antithetical hypotheses emerge from the literature. On the one hand, it has been suggested that tattooing is a manifestation of psychopathology. However, other sources suggest that tattooing represents an expression of the construction of personal identity. A specific objective of this review is to reconcile as far as possible some of these highly diverse positions. In doing so, we emphasize the multidimensional nature of tattooing, which is a highly heterogeneous phenomenon whose meaning may not always be the same.
