Full scale buildings sometimes are too big to be fully monitored and, moreover, if occupancy are inside, they can fail some measurements. FINAOSTA is a research activity conducted by University of Florence on two buildings – one school and one office building – located in Aosta, in the North of Italy. Buildings have different age, different exposition, different material construction. Aim of the research is to propose an appropriate methodology to monitor thermal plant and to investigate on technical solutions for reducing energy consumptions in both buildings. Two different plant system solutions are identified and buildings are monitored through an electronic system regulated from an internet platform; data collected are used to evaluate energy saving and indoor comfort due to both technical solutions. Due to the high volume of the building, a decision has been made on portions to be monitored and compared: results are used as input to simulate the full scale buildings. The paper evidences difficulties in defining zones to be monitored and obstacles due to the inappropriate intervention of occupants on the instrumentation.
