Digital Tools for Survey and Knowledge: an Investigation of the Ancient Cathedral and the Pionta Hill in Arezzo, Italy

The hillock named "Pionta", in Arezzo, Italy, was once a walled citadel, which was politically aligned with the Pope. In 15 61 it was destroyed. The rediscovery of this area started in the 1960s. In 2014 a new round of investigation was started, based on a new survey of the whole area with the use of Drone Photography, 30 Laser Scanning and a Total Station. The reading of the architectural traces, the interpretation of the original architectural projects, brought the basis for hypothesising a map of the next possible excavations. The new data was used to produce drawings and schemes useful for testing ideas and dissemination. The research presented here discusses the status and the advances of the survey data and their use to enhance knowledge of the original asset of this ancient place.
