Minors‘ number in IPM in Italy is about 450-500 (this is their real number, because it’s independent from the re-entries). IPM in Italy are now (2011) 16, located in almost all regions. The most of them are located in the South and in the Islands (because of marginality and poverty and involvement of minors in organized crime – mafia, camorra, ndrangheta). Foreign minors (prevalent in the past years , the peak 60% on 2004) are now 43%. Alternative punishments are not applied – generally – to minors lacking in social networks (family, school, job), particularly to those coming from abroad. In such cases juvenile prison becomes a way to control their marginalization and poverty. Employed staff: on 2009 1390 units (both office-workers and youth workers), and 800 prison officers. Professionals and social workers are in the minority.
