BACKGROUND: functional training produces enormous benefits in young sportsmen and elite athletes. OBJECTIVE: to determine whether functional training, adapted to adult and elderly subjects with moderate physical problems, produces most significant improvements respect to the activities of gymnastics and Pilates. MATERIALS AND METHODS: study of four months (January-May) on a sample of 46 subjects, divided into two groups: 23 in the study group (A) and 23 in the control group (B). Questionnaires ADL, IADL and SF-12 administered at the beginning of the study; objective tests (Tinetti Gait and Balance Scale, SPPB, Sit and Reach, TUG, Fukuda Unterberger and BIA) initial, intermediate and final. Final feedback. RESULTS: test scores improved significantly throughout the sample but more to the study group. Small improvements are already beginning to see after the intermediate test (March). CONCLUSIONS: the improvements induced by functional training are significant, especially as regards the improvement of balance and mobility.
