The age of sound: TV series sound and narrative complexity

Saggio di apertura del numero monografico "TV Genres in the Age of Abundance. Textual Complexity, Technological Change, Audience Practices", edited by Massimo Scaglioni and Ira Wagman per la rivista di fascia A “Comunicazioni sociali”. Il saggio si propone di esaminare un aspetto tra i più significativi della complessità televisiva in quell’era televisiva contemporanea che John Ellis ha definito “età dell’abbondanza”: il suono televisivo. Il saggio, attrvaerso l’analisi puntuale sia di alcune serie televisive del nuovo millennio che attraverso l’attività dei maggiori supervisori musicali operativi in ambito televisivo, mette in luce innanzitutto la presenza ricorrente nella serialità televisiva del suono, della canzone e della musica e le più frequenti configurazioni cui dà luogo. Viene quindi esaminato il ruolo spesso svolto da questi programmi televisivi nello svecchiare il sistema di relazioni tra suono e immagine presente nel paesaggio mediale e nella ricerca e sperimentazione offerta ad altri ambiti, primo tra tutti il cinema. In secondo luogo viene posta attenzione a come il suono televisivo delle serie televisive contemporanee divenga un elemento di forte sfida teorica nella considerazione del genere televisivo: la musica in particolare, sia nei suoi contenuti che nelle particolari configurazioni che assume nei confronti dell’immagine televisiva, mostra la necessità di una più corretta riconsiderazione dei generi televisivi alla luce del dialogo che la serie televisiva intrattiene con i processi di produzione e di ricezione dei testi televisivi e con il circostante panorama mediale. The essay aims to examine one of the most significant aspects of television complexity in that contemporary television era that John Ellis has defined as the "age of plenty": television sound. The essay, through the punctual analysis of both some television series of the new millennium and through the activity of the major music supervisors operating in the television field, first of all highlights the recurring presence in the television series of sound, song and music and the most frequent configurations to which they give rise. The research also focuses on the role often played by these television programs in rejuvenating the system of relations between sound and image present in the media landscape and in the research and experimentation offered to other areas, first of all to the cinema. Secondly, attention is paid to how the television sound of contemporary TV series becomes an element of strong theoretical challenge in the consideration of the television genre: music in particular, both in its contents and in the particular configurations it assumes in relation to the television image, shows the need for a more correct reconsideration of television genres in the light of the dialogue that the television series maintains with the processes of production and reception of television texts and with the surrounding media landscape.
