This article aims to explore the identity-building processes of the “second-generation” Muslim females – who lives in Italy – in light of the twofold paradigm of heredity and reinterpretation. To this end, it will present a research carried out in Florence, by collecting biographical narratives from women of Moroccan and Pakistani origin raised in Italy. The process of identity building is analyzed through the lens of the agency and intersectionality. More specifically, referring to agency, the aim is to shed light on the capacity of these women to take an “active” role in the identity construction process, by identifying which “challenges” or “tensions” arise from their multi-belongings. The topics explored in the biographical narratives are “gender” and “religion”, in order to investigate the influence of these two social categories of belonging on each other during identity formation. To this end, by referring to intersectionality, the aim is to explore whether religion may be a factor of empowerment-disempowerment in the process of female identity building. In short, the biographical approach will be used inductively to construct identity profiles which make it possible to move from individual stories to sociological ideal-types in which each story is inserted.
