Social networks were at the heart of the Tunisian revolution and led to a fundamental change in the connectivity between Tunisians. We hypothesize that such transformations have significant impact on citizenship practices, and civic engagement in civil society in the current democratic transition. Based on the data collected during our research into a civic movement born on the internet in 2011 (Tunisian antiracist movement), in this paper, we will examine the continuities and discontinuities in the modalities of engagement online and off line. We will also analyze the communication strategies that militants use across multiple media platforms and systems.

Abstract

Social networks were at the heart of the Tunisian revolution and led to a fundamental change in the connectivity between Tunisians. We hypothesize that such transformations have significant impact on citizenship practices, and civic engagement in civil society in the current democratic transition. Based on the data collected during our research into a civic movement born on the internet in 2011 (Tunisian antiracist movement), in this paper, we will examine the continuities and discontinuities in the modalities of engagement online and off line. We will also analyze the communication strategies that militants use across multiple media platforms and systems.
