Just as it had done in the Middle Ages, so in the early modern era too Siena clung firmly to a single patron, assigning patron saints a purely auxiliary role by comparison with the role attributed to the Virgin. While the cult of the Assumption expressed the legal individuality of a city now part and parcel of the Medici state, the cult of the Immaculate Conception, associated in the early 16th century with the defence of libertas, by the early modern era bespoke the need to ennoble and to impart a sacred aura to the civitas and to its leadership class. A new cult rose to popularity in the late 16th century: the Madonna di Provenzano, a modest terracotta pietà moved to the new church of Santa Maria di Provenzano in 1611, became the object of a new and enthusiastic form of devotion (celebrated on 2 July, the Feast of the Visitation). Its popularity appears to be linked to the balance achieved between the House of Medici and the local leadership class, yet also to heartfelt participation on the part of the people from the Contrade.
