The History of Education looking at itself

The History of Education as a scientific discipline and academic or educational field, is suffering from some decades ago, various kinds of changes. The philosophical assumptions have mutated, methodologies utilized have been expanded and refined, topics and perspectives have multiplied. The styles and ways of doing the History of Education have changed their trend, as the scientific communication tools are doing for the discipline. Also, the number and quality of publications related to the History of Education have significantly increased. Paradoxically, at the same time, discipline is losing weight in training educators of all kinds and from any geographic region.  Such issues are topical, of interest and need for the international scientific community of historians of education. Examples are, among others, the works organized by the Standing Working Group: Mapping the Discipline, organized within the International Standing Conference on the History of Education (ISCHE); the monograph of 2015 of the journal History of Education & Children’s Literature, which is devoted to «The role of scientific journals in the development and internationalization of historical and educational research»; and the Workshop on scientific journals dedicated to the History of Education held in Valladolid (Spain) on February, the 26th 2015, within the Conference on History of Education Pedagogy in the Face of Death: reflections and interpretations in historical and philosophical perspective. The purpose of Espacio, Tiempo y Educación is to contribute transnationally to the epistemological debate on the History of Education, and to provide not only some answers to the question: what is the History of Education today? but also to elaborate ideas and draw possible trajectories for the discipline and, ultimately, analyse in depth what the History of Education could become.
