In the paper, some preliminary results of an ongoing research on the bridge deck’s performance under wind are reported. The research aims to determine an approximate way to predict the critical flutter wind speed of a given deck by analyzing an “aerodynamic performance index” which allows to estimate the stability behavior in comparison with the one of an “equivalent” flat plate. Both the analytical aspects of the problem as well as some of the results obtained from wind tunnel experiments are reported.

Abstract

In the paper, some preliminary results of an ongoing research on the bridge deck’s performance under wind are reported. The research aims to determine an approximate way to predict the critical flutter wind speed of a given deck by analyzing an “aerodynamic performance index” which allows to estimate the stability behavior in comparison with the one of an “equivalent” flat plate. Both the analytical aspects of the problem as well as some of the results obtained from wind tunnel experiments are reported.
