The issue of Dante’s family’s nobility can now be approached using new tools. Recent investigations into society within the comuni, social networks, and the structure of family memory enable us to delineate the historical confines of Cacciaguida’s account. At the beginning of the affair, the Alighieri family had relations with those who would become their enemies at the end of the 13th century. Subsequently, to crown what would appear to be a ruthless social climb, the Alighieris, like many other city-dwelling families, appear to have constructed a ‘myth of origin’. However, Dante did not accept this myth lying down, calling it into question and, perhaps, using it as the inspiration for his tormented reflections on nobility.

Abstract
The issue of Dante’s family’s nobility can now be approached using new tools. Recent investigations into society within the comuni, social networks, and the structure of family memory enable us to delineate the historical confines of Cacciaguida’s account. At the beginning of the affair, the Alighieri family had relations with those who would become their enemies at the end of the 13th century. Subsequently, to crown what would appear to be a ruthless social climb, the Alighieris, like many other city-dwelling families, appear to have constructed a ‘myth of origin’. However, Dante did not accept this myth lying down, calling it into question and, perhaps, using it as the inspiration for his tormented reflections on nobility.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
