The southern ‘rondò’ of Piazza Pitti, formed by the loggia, the guardhouse and the ‘torrino’, was built between 1764 and 1766 under the direction of Giuseppe Ruggieri. A large terrace in the shape of a circular arc was placed before the loggia; the head of the whole building was completed with existing buildings. The iconography of the eighteenth and nineteenth century provides numerous depictions of the rondò and of the piazza, but these do not highlight a fundamental aspect. The intervention of Ruggieri in fact did not leave the design of the piazza unfinished, it was completed and the same design would have been replicated in the northern ‘rondò’. The piazza started by Ruggeri was later incorporated into the nineteenth-century design of Pasquale Poccianti, that was so dominant with his stand in large ashlars, that the memory of the previous solution was deleted.

Abstract
The piazza started by Ruggeri was later incorporated into the nineteenth-century design of Pasquale Poccianti, that was so dominant with his stand in large ashlars, that the memory of the previous solution was deleted.File | Dimensione | Formato | |
