The article aims to investigate the potential of outdoor areas, courtyards and gardens, within the residence for university students, starting from a study of their functions and the manifest benefits that the presence of green spaces can offer in this context, both from an aesthetic-decorative and social-ecologic point of view. Even though on Italian scale you can generally notice a quite poor consideration for such typology of spaces, we hold on the contrary that these spaces could become of primary importance, particularly in supporting the process of integration which is expected by the attachments to the executive decrees of 338/2000 Italian law “Instructions about lodgings and residences for university students” regarding the minimum dimensional and qualitative standards and the guidelines, where the importance of social and cultural integration of students in the life of the city through a “continuum in social structure and services” is pointed out. We believe that this potential, in particular, can be expressed at its best right in the ambit of the “integrated” settlement, which is accomplished through the spread of student housing facilities in the urban areas under the influence of the universities and which emerges as the most accepted historic model on the Italian territory. In accordance with this model indeed a tight, vital and constant connection between the residences and the urban context of reference is established, with the possibility of mutual exchange in terms of relations and services. As for outdoor areas, if present, two specific circumstances can be identified: a situation where such spaces are an exclusive appartenance of the students accommodated in the student residences and another one in which these spaces are placed nearby and serve the whole urban community. While the first solution could contribute more effectively to the socialization among students in the structures, the second one could become especially interesting for the redevelopment of the urban areas where they are placed. The availability of outdoor areas could indeed allow various activities which well combine with the condition of a university student with specific reference to recreational and cultural aspects, while establishing itself as an invaluable resource for university towns.
