The aim of this article is to offer a reflection on digital textuality with reference to language and software studies. Indeed, digital language – more specifically, the language of social media – is characterized by an important postmodern component, especially in relation to the discursive practices selected by users in composing their messages; at the same time, this type of textuality is highly influenced by the architecture of the platforms where such messages are created and shared. The methodological component of the article will be given by a combination of systemic-functional linguistics, computer-mediated-communication, information theory and multimodality, approached socio-semiotically.

Abstract

The aim of this article is to offer a reflection on digital textuality with reference to language and software studies. Indeed, digital language – more specifically, the language of social media – is characterized by an important postmodern component, especially in relation to the discursive practices selected by users in composing their messages; at the same time, this type of textuality is highly influenced by the architecture of the platforms where such messages are created and shared. The methodological component of the article will be given by a combination of systemic-functional linguistics, computer-mediated-communication, information theory and multimodality, approached socio-semiotically.
