We report the first human case of meningitis and sepsis caused in a child by Actinobacillus suis or A. equuli, a common opportunistic pathogen of swine or horses, respectively. Identification was performed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionizationtime of flight mass spectrometry and real-time PCR assay. A previous visit to a farm was suspected as the source of infection.

Abstract

We report the first human case of meningitis and sepsis caused in a child by Actinobacillus suis or A. equuli, a common opportunistic pathogen of swine or horses, respectively. Identification was performed by matrix-assisted laser desorption ionizationtime of flight mass spectrometry and real-time PCR assay. A previous visit to a farm was suspected as the source of infection.
