Here we report the use of a photo-acoustic technique, picosecond transient grating, to measure the propagation of surface acoustic waves in a 1D phononic crystal. The experimental data enables the complete characterization of the band diagram overcoming the band edge wave vector. The band folding and gap phenomena are evident from the results.
