We inhabit trembling landscapes, mutating and multifaceted, often void of those values, which once characterized them so distinctly. The European Landscape Convention originated with the ethical mission to ensure people a quality landscape that contributes to well-being, to satisfy the wish for development of communities and to reinforce European identity. This objective needs new tools today to determine its effectiveness on the territory, avoiding however the risk of adding complexity to the dense hierarchy of existing planning instruments. Facing this dual demand for the recovery of a sense of place through accessible means, the landscape quality objectives can provide an innovative answer that is laid out according to three parameters which are able to describe the current position of a landscape in the perceptual space of the population: Magnitude, Direction and Way.
