The present paper will introduce to the first results of an investigation on manufacturing activities in Tuscany in 1835 by means of GIS (Geographic Information System) technology since its beginning a few years ago. The main aim of this research project, co-funded by SITA “Servizio Informativo Territoriale e Ambientale” of Regione Toscana and CIST “Centro Interuniversitario di Scienze del Territorio”, was the elaboration of geo-referenced layers of all existing manufactures in Tuscany at the time of activation of the Catasto Generale. By cross-checking geo-referenced maps (to scales ranging mainly from 1:2,500 to 1:5,000) and data provided by historical registers preserved at the State Archives of Tuscany (Tavole Indicative and Campioni dei Proprietari), new databases were developed permitting to exactly locate all known opifici in their original positions, thus eventually enabling to elaborate density maps of these facilities as well as statistical analysis of their number, typology, mutual distances and network relationships.

Abstract
The present paper will introduce to the first results of an investigation on manufacturing activities in Tuscany in 1835 by means of GIS (Geographic Information System) technology since its beginning a few years ago. The main aim of this research project, co-funded by SITA “Servizio Informativo Territoriale e Ambientale” of Regione Toscana and CIST “Centro Interuniversitario di Scienze del Territorio”, was the elaboration of geo-referenced layers of all existing manufactures in Tuscany at the time of activation of the Catasto Generale. By cross-checking geo-referenced maps (to scales ranging mainly from 1:2,500 to 1:5,000) and data provided by historical registers preserved at the State Archives of Tuscany (Tavole Indicative and Campioni dei Proprietari), new databases were developed permitting to exactly locate all known opifici in their original positions, thus eventually enabling to elaborate density maps of these facilities as well as statistical analysis of their number, typology, mutual distances and network relationships.I documenti in FLORE sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
