The dreamofcontrollingandguidingcomputer-basedsystemsusinghumanbrainsignalshasslowlybutsteadilybecomea reality.Theavailabletechnologyallowsreal-timeimplementationofsystemsthatmeasureneuronalactivity,converttheirsignals, and translatetheiroutputforthepurposeofcontrollingmechanicalandelectronicsystems.Thispaperdescribesthestateof the artofnon-invasivebrain–machineinterfaces(BMIs)andcriticallyinvestigatesboththecurrenttechnologicallimitsandthe future potentialthatBMIshaveforspaceapplications.WepresentanassessmentoftheadvantagesthatBMIscanprovideand justify thepreferredcandidateconceptsforspaceapplicationstogetherwithavisionoffuturedirectionsfortheirimplementation.
