This paper aims to examine the characteristics of the Event Manager, as a specific project manager. To do this, first. we carry out a review of current literature on event management, distinguishing between: the event studies perspective, the professional approach, and the project approach in event management. In particular, we show initially the studies on the characteristics of the event manager and the main problems associated with this role, and to identify the specific skills of the position, related to successful performances. Subsequently, we present an analysis conducted in a primary event organization located in Italy and specialized in luxury business events. The data were collected through interviews with the management of the organization (i.e., supervisor) and the job holders (i.e., event managers), using the repertoty grid technique (RGT) and critical incident technique (CIT). The results allowed the identification of the roles and the competencies of a successful manager. Evidence from the results will give useful suggestions for managing in effective way event managers and enabling those kind of organizations to pursuit their success.
