The 150 anniversary of the death of Albert Oppel (1831-1865) has provided the opportunity to celebrate this outstanding stratigrapher with a Thematic Issue dedicated to the importance of fossils for dating and correlation of sedimentary rocks. After revisiting the figure of the scientist and his overwhelming heritage to modern Bio- and Chronostratigraphy, we will explore the Phanerozoic through the volume contents, using all major fossil groups, in order to verify if and how fossils are still able in the light of the third millennium to give a significant contribution to Chronostratigraphy.

Abstract

The 150 anniversary of the death of Albert Oppel (1831-1865) has provided the opportunity to celebrate this outstanding stratigrapher with a Thematic Issue dedicated to the importance of fossils for dating and correlation of sedimentary rocks. After revisiting the figure of the scientist and his overwhelming heritage to modern Bio- and Chronostratigraphy, we will explore the Phanerozoic through the volume contents, using all major fossil groups, in order to verify if and how fossils are still able in the light of the third millennium to give a significant contribution to Chronostratigraphy.
