The spaceborn experiment PAMELA will measure the primary cosmic ray particle and anti-particle spectra with high accuracy over an unprecedented energy range. PAMELA's sensitivity to a cosmic antimatter component at the level of 7x10(-8) for the He-/He ratio, and its capability to detect galactic Dark Matter by WIMP annihilation signals in p and e(+) spectral are highlights of a broad physics program of this 3-years mission. We review performance and physics capabilities of this state-of-the-art spectrometer, which will be launched in 2004 with the Russian satellite Resurs DK-1 into a semi-polar orbit.
