Abstract
The birth of modern European theatre went through a long period of incubation, characterized by the adoption of classical models, including the tragedies of Seneca. What was the attitude of early modern playwrights towards this model? In Italy and in France, many plays used to be translated directly from the original source but progressively writers tried to renew the ancient text by means of rhetoric additions, with the intent of modernizing the meaning and definition of tragedy. This article features the analysis of some passages of three unrecognized tragedies (Giovanni Paolo Trapolini, "Thesida", 1576; Roland Brisset, "Thyestes", 1589; Monsieur De Monléon, "Le Thyeste", 1638), in order to trace the working method of early modern playwrights.I documenti in FLORE sono protetti da copyright e tutti i diritti sono riservati, salvo diversa indicazione.
