Scientific literature has extensively investigated the Florentine educational contexts, and especially the highest level of teaching, the academic one. Less attention has been paid to the secular side of the 13th century local culture, in regards to both grammatical / rhetorical education and scientific and medical one. However, the analysis of these very aspects reveals a much more lively and permeable Florentine intellectual landscape than is commonly postulated.
