Structural monitoring through dynamic identification has been increasingly recognized as an effective technique for assessing the health status of many structural typologies. In particular, due to the low invasiveness of this approach, it appears to be very attractive for cultural heritage buildings; among the others, especially for masonry towers that by nature are easily susceptible to vibrations. For masonry structures, however, still a number of issues are open to properly detect the irreversible variation of the dynamic characteristics due to occurred or incipient damage phenomena, given also the high sensitiveness of the modal properties to environmental conditions. Indeed, possible effects of structural changes and damage on modal characteristics are far from being clearly identified. For these reasons, of particular interest is performing numerical simulations aimed at evaluating if and how type, amount and location of damage within the structure may affect its modal properties. In this paper, several structural schemes of actual masonry towers have been considered and real damage scenarios have been obtained by applying increasingly severe seismic actions. The occurred variations in the main modal properties - natural frequencies, mode shapes, etc. - have then been evaluated and analyzed.
