An agronomic study conducted on lettuce demonstrated that a simplified floating system could provide a suitable produce for domestic use. Either single salts or ready-to-use liquid fertilizers were used to prepare the nutrient solution and no difference in lettuce yield and quality was observed between the two solutions with the exception of nitrate content, which was higher when single salts were used. Considering the agronomic results, and criteria of aesthetics, limited weight and obstruction, manageability, modularity, novelty in materials, communication, and low cost, a small-scale floating system was then designed and an item not only functional, but also provided with aesthetic value, was developed.
