Abstract

Recreational fishing in Florence. With post-industrialisation the fishing participation is reduced, indicating a negative effect of urbanization and post-modernisation on recreational fishing interest. Dedicated management and marketing intervention is needed to reverse the track of diminishing fishing interest in industrialized countries. The inland recreational fisheries sector normally provides many, but poor popular, benefits to society. This paper investigates the knowledge of recreational fishing in the famous art city of Florence, looking for market development of both leisure and touristic sectors. However recreational fishing rarely operates in a vacuum and, thus, this paper takes in account the hoteliers point of view. An interview based on a structured questionnaire was conducted on a representative sample of 50 city hotels. Actually, in Florence they do not perceive angling as a tourist attraction. However they are open mind about this “new” sector and look for more information about how it operates and how to motivate the tourists’ participation according to the traditional and high-cultural image of Florence. The benefit is to improve environmentally the concept of the city renewing the social and cultural accessibility of the Arno river as a modern leisure facility including of recreational angling services.
