In phenomenology, the notion of will is closely connected to that of intentionality. And yet this term exists with two meanings: the static one relates to the active notions of consciousness and constitution; the genetic one revolves around the passive notions of body and co-emergence. The first refers to the centrality of representation; in the second, the concepts of impersonality and anonymity take on a crucial role even at the level of simple sensation. Taking this distinction as its starting point, this essay aims to investigate the complementary relationship in phenomenology between voluntariness and involuntariness.

Abstract

In phenomenology, the notion of will is closely connected to that of intentionality. And yet this term exists with two meanings: the static one relates to the active notions of consciousness and constitution; the genetic one revolves around the passive notions of body and co-emergence. The first refers to the centrality of representation; in the second, the concepts of impersonality and anonymity take on a crucial role even at the level of simple sensation. Taking this distinction as its starting point, this essay aims to investigate the complementary relationship in phenomenology between voluntariness and involuntariness.
