In a climate change scenario, where the dry season and, thus, the areas at desertification risk are progressively increasing, afforestation/reforestation plays a key role to prevent degradation. Several technical problems are related to forest restoration of lands at risk of drought; among these, there is the quality of the planting material. In Italy, forest nursery stock is generally of poor quality, being produced with standardized methods regardless of planting aim. The objective of PIF-VIAA project is to define the optimal media, in terms of combination of substrate and fertilization, to grow plants able to survive in hydric stress conditions. The final aim is to refine the nursery cultivation process to grow seedlings to be established in a climate change scenario.
