Abstract

The Hebrew Melodies are the last part of Romanzero, the work Heine composed when he was lying in his bed since many years. The poems are his spiritual heritage, a tribute to the religion of his ancestors. In those Melodies revives the great literary tradition of the Sephardic Jews, and Heine can tie once again the links with the Jewish tradition broken through his conversion. The poetic language provides him with a homeland, the poetic language itself is the performance of being-at-home in the world. The critical essay analyses the duality of Heine’s identity both Jewish and German, a leit -motiv of his entire literary and poetic production.
