The paper deals with the course of Greek dialectology held by saussure in 1902- 3 and its implications in the construction of patterns of linguistic variation in saussure’s theory of language. the study compares the preparatory notes of F. de saussure and the notes taken by ch. Bally, who was attending the course, and attempts to understand the intersection between general linguistics, historical linguistics and linguistic geography in saussure’s work.
