This document presents CRMtex, an extension of CIDOC CRM created to support the study of ancient documents and to identify relevant textual entities involved in their study; furthermore, it proposes the use of CIDOC CRM to encode them and to model the scientific process of investigation related to the study of ancient texts in order to foster integration with other cultural heritage research fields. After identifying the key concepts, assessing the available technologies and analysing the entities provided by CIDOC CRM and by its extensions, the extension introduces new specific classes more responsive to the specific needs of the various disciplines involved (including papyrology, palaeography, codicology and epigraphy). The profitable application of IT to the study of ancient sources for expanding our knowledge of the past is the inspiring principle of this work.
