Brick has been an integral part of our architectural culture for millennia. However, its nature keeping to evolve. In particular, the recent environmental policy in EU and in Italy has required a drastic reduction in energy demand of building construction, leading, in a few decades, to a bricks metamorphosis: solid brick has transformed into a high-tech product with a larger format and higher performance. The evolution of bricks seems to be oriented on the design of the finished elements (e.g. interlocking blocks, blocks for thin and staggered walls), on the block geometry (e.g. rectified, with interlocking joint) and on the mixture of other materials (perlite, rock wool). The thermal insulating blocks enclose all these innovations and represent one of the most interesting brick products. The innovations could be understood through the knowledgement of the product for its material characteristics, its production process. First of all, the coupled materials, brick and thermal insulation, as assembled, are able to enhance the specific properties of the block, although they have a different physical and chemical structure. This means that a traditional material becomes able to respond adequately to the needs of contemporary building.
