Unstable Optical Resonators: Comment

In questa breve nota di commento a un articolo di Siegman apparso su questa rivista, segnaliamo che, oltre ai risonatori instabili che Siegman presenta, ci sono risonatori che, pur avendo geometrie stabili come i flat-roof resonators o i rimmed resonators, presentano andamenti oscillatori al variare di un parametro tipico, in modo che esistono regioni di alte perdite, cioè regioni di instabilità, di interesse per le applicazioni ai laser di potenza. This is a short paper adding more information to a paper from A. Siegman on optical unstable resonators. We note that, in addition to the geometrically unstable resonators mentioned in his paper, there are resonators that, although geometrically stable, can present an oscillating trend of the losses of different modes, depending on a typical parameter. Examples are the flat-roof resonator and the Fabry-Perot rimmed resonators, which in the high loss regions are unstable and of interest for applications.
