The essay illustrates the original proposals of renewal of the city of New York advanced during the twentieth century by exponents of European architectural culture more involved in the search for innovative architectural and existential visions. The proposals are analyzed in light of the influence that the city has in turn exercised on a part of the twentieth century European architectural thinking, showing how its very presence has conditioned urban and architectural theories.
