As the fourth representative of the Qing Empire in Italy, Xue Fucheng outstands many of the colleagues that preceded and followed him for his keen curiosity and will to understand what he saw and experienced abroad. This is witnessed by his travel diary, that contains long passages about the Kingdom of Italy. This paper highlights Xue’s impressions about late 19th century Italy, including his views on Catholic religion, on the population of the peninsula and on some political issues of the time.
