L’umanista e l’ambasciatore. Nuove ricerche su Filelfo a Firenze

Building upon fresh archival evidence as well as a reassessment of the interaction between Francesco Filelfo and the Florentine literary milieu, the paper sheds new light on the humanist’s stay in Florence (1429-1434), a topic largely neglected since the contribution of late nineteenth-century scholarship. In particular, the paper concentrates on two related episodes from Filelfo’s biography (which, interestingly enough, the humanist managed not to refer to afterwards): his being arrested in early 1432 and shortly after sentenced by the incumbent Signoria to three years of confinement – a condemnation that was immediately withdrawn, however. Departing from the standard analysis, according to which Filelfo’s misadventures throughout his Florentine years are always to be taken as plots devised by the Medicean group against him, the paper brings out new evidence leading to an alternative interpretation. Both the arrest and the condemnation may in fact be related to a harsh quarrel arisen between Filelfo and Ermolao Donato, the Venetian ambassador to Florence, whose financial, cultural, and political consequences are here for the first time fully acknowledged. // Grazie a una ricerca di prima mano, il saggio porta nuove testimonianze intorno al soggiorno fiorentino di Francesco Filelfo (1429-1434) e alle relazioni culturali da lui intessute durante quegli anni con l’ambiente cittadino, integrando così quanto acquisito in questo campo, ormai più di un secolo fa, nella stagione della Scuola storica. In particolare, la ricerca fa luce su due episodi della biografia di Filelfo, su cui l’umanista preferì sempre tacere, quali l’arresto subito nei primi mesi del 1432 e la successiva condanna a tre anni di confino, poi revocata, inflittagli dalla Signoria fiorentina. All’origine di tutta questa vicenda, non vi sono infatti, come si è sempre erroneamente supposto, le trame interne del gruppo mediceo contro l’umanista, ma piuttosto un violento scontro intervenuto tra il Tolentinate e l’ambasciatore veneziano a Firenze Ermolao Donato, di cui vengono messi in luce i risvolti economici e politici.
