The article explores the life and writings of the Roman knight Stefano Porcari from three different vantage points. Firstly, it provides fresh archival evidence on the relationship between Porcari and the Florentine merchant milieu during the 1420s and 1430s. Secondly, it examines a letter from the papers of the Medici family which discloses unknown details about the 1453 conspiracy against pope Nicholas V. Finally, it discusses the portrait of Stefano Porcari that Niccolò Machiavelli outlined in his Florentine Histories.
