Tra Firenze e Napoli. Nuove testimonianze sul mercante-umanista Benedetto Cotrugli e sul suo “Libro dell’arte di mercatura”

Il saggio presenta alcune nuove testimonianze sulla biografia del mercante e umanista raguseo Benedetto Cotrugli, autore de "Il libro dell’arte di mercatura", sottolineando in particolare gli stretti rapporti, sia commerciali che culturali, da lui intrattenuti, oltre che con la corte aragonese di Napoli, anche con il mondo fiorentino. Vengono inoltre segnalate, per la prima volta, alcune lettere autografe di Cotrugli conservate nell'Archivio di Stato di Firenze. / This paper re-examines some aspects of the life and literary work of the Croatian merchant-humanist Benedetto Cotrugli (Dubrovnik, ca. 1410-L'Aquila, 1469). Especially known for the contribution of his Libro dell'arte di mercatura to the history of accounting, Cotrugli was also significant as a humanist and as a vernacular writer. However, Cotrugli's complex personality, as well as the value of his literary activity at the Aragonese court in Naples in the 1450s and 1460s, have been largely underestimated in the field of Italian fifteenth-century studies. With the aim of raising new interest in Cotrugli, in the first section of this article I furnish new archival evidence of Cotrugli's business and cultural relationship with the city of Florence between the 1430s and 1440s. In the second, I place Cotrugli's most significant vernacular work, the Libro dell'arte di mercatura, in the larger cultural background of the Neapolitan humanism of the mid-fifteenth century.
