Historic cities face a number of critical issues, such as impacts of poor open spaces and built quality. In this volume it is discussed on how these complex problems can be tackled properly to make better places through transforming open space approach. The book is divided into two parts: Part I - Alternative Approach to Heritage Open Space Design gathers a selection of contributions that they contain forward-looking ideas and strategies for evaluation of heritage open spaces, discovering relations between cultural value of spaces and spatial dynamics. Specific tools for particular matters arising for historical urban landscape design and management. Part II - Historic Open Space Improvements form Social, Aesthetic and Well-being Perspective defines how historic open spaces are more than places of social and economic activities but also spaces to be transformed with new uses, place-identity and vigour. Historic open spaces should be re-created as attractive places for health and well-being whilst keeping their cultural value. They can help to open the way for social integration, spatial quality and urban safeguarding.
